The Scale of the Challenge

Since the Industrial Revolution began around 1750, atmospheric CO2 levels have risen from approximately 280 ppm to 424 ppm today - an increase of over 50%. This rise is directly linked to the burning of fossil fuels.

The Carbon Majors database traces 69% of all historical fossil fuel and cement CO2 emissions to just 180 industrial producers. The CO2 emissions in this database accounted for 80.3% of global fossil fuel and cement CO2 emissions in 2023.
