36 Companies Responsible for Half of Global Emissions
New analysis from the Carbon Majors database reveals concentrated responsibility for climate change among a small number of fossil fuel producers.

A landmark study from the Carbon Majors Database has revealed that just 36 companies were linked to over half of global fossil fuel and cement CO2 emissions in 2023. The analysis traces 33.9 GtCO2e of emissions to 169 active entities in the database.
State-owned enterprises dominate the list, with 16 of the top 20 emitters being state-owned. Saudi Aramco tops the list, responsible for 4.51% of global emissions, followed by Coal India at 3.68% and CHN Energy at 3.65%.
