Despite global efforts to transition to cleaner energy, coal remains the largest contributor to global CO2 emissions, accounting for 41.1% of all emissions tracked in the Carbon Majors database. Coal emissions grew by 1.9% in 2023, adding 258 MtCO2e compared to the previous year.

The growth is driven primarily by Asian countries, where 7 of the top 20 emitting companies are coal producers. Six of these are Chinese companies, and one is Coal India.
